Wounds of Christ
During His Passion, Jesus suffered various wounds, such as those from the crown of thorns, from the scourging at the pillar, from His shoulder carrying the Cross, and from the crucifixion itself. Isaiah prophesied these wounds when he said: “But he was wounded For our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaias 53:5). This was repeated by St. Peter and St. Paul in the New Testament: “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24), and “But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. … Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus” (Galatians 6:14, 17).
However, it wasn’t until the twelfth century that devotion to the wounds of Christ became popular, initially through the preaching of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) and St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226). In fact, St. Francis of Assisi was the first saint recorded to have received the stigmata (physical manifestations of the wounds of Christ) in his own body. Since then, there have been a number of saints and holy men/women who have received the stigmata (either visible or invisible), and many mystics who have received revelations from Jesus about His Wounds.
There have also been many prayers written in honor of these Sacred Wounds (particularly the nail wounds on Jesus’ hands and feet as well as the lance wound which pierced His side). Some of the more famous prayers come from St. Clare of Assisi, St. Mechtilde and St. Gertrude of Helfta, St. Bridget of Sweden, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and most recently, Servant of God Sr. Marie Martha Chambon.

Prayer to Shoulder Wound of Christ
It is said that St. Bernard asked Our Lord which was His greatest unrecorded suffering, and He answered: “I had on My Shoulder while I bore My Cross on the Way of Sorrows, a grievous Wound which was more painful than the others, and which is not recorded by men. Honor this Wound with your devotion, and I will grant you whatsoever you ask through its virtue and merit. And in regard to all those who shall venerate this wound, I will remit to them all their venial sins, and will no longer remember their mortal sins.“
PRAYER
Most loving Jesus, meek Lamb of God, I, a miserable sinner, salute and worship the most Sacred Wound of Your Shoulder on which You bore Your heavy Cross which so tore Your flesh and laid bare Your bones as to inflict on You an anguish greater than any other wound of Your Most Blessed Body. I adore You, O Jesus most sorrowful; I praise and glorify You, and give You thanks for this most sacred and painful Wound, beseeching You by that exceeding pain, and by the crushing burden of Your heavy Cross, to be merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me all my mortal and venial sins, and to lead me on towards Heaven along the Way of Your Cross. Amen.

Golden Arrow Prayer
In 1843, Our Lord appeared to Sister Marie of St. Peter, a holy Carmelite Nun in Tours, France and asked her to spread the devotion to His Most Holy Face and Holy Name, as He was greatly sorrowed by blasphemy and by the profanation of Sunday by our work and failure to go to Mass. In 1885, Pope Leo XIII established this devotion as an archconfraternity; and contrary to custom, immediately established it for the entire world. This was a favorite devotion of St. Therese of Lisieux, and she was so devoted to the Holy Face that she added the title to her name at the time she took the habit: St. Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face.
PRAYER
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most mysterious and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in heaven, on earth and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the most Holy Sacrament of the altar.
Eternal Father, we offer You the Holy Face of Jesus, covered with blood, sweat, dust and spittle, in reparation for the crimes of communists, blasphemers, and for the profaners of the Holy Name and of the Holy Day. Amen.
Chaplet of the Five Wounds of Christ
The following Chaplet is comprised of meditations and prayers from St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Mechtilde, and Sr. Marie Martha Chambon. Interestingly, it was actually Jesus who gave Sr. Chambon in 1867 the invocations that we use on the decade-beads of the rosary, and He called it the “Chaplet of Mercy.” Note that these words are very similar to the “Chaplet of Divine Mercy” given to St. Faustina 68 years later in 1935.
Begin with the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
On Crucifix, say: Look down upon me, O good and gentle Jesus, while before Your face I humbly kneel and with burning soul, pray and beseech You to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope, and charity; true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment – while I contemplate with great love and tender pity, Your five most precious wounds, pondering over them within me and calling to mind the words which David, Your prophet, said of You, my Jesus: “They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones.” Amen.
On large bead, say: O Jesus, Divine Redeemer, be merciful to us and to the whole world. Amen.
On next three small beads, say:
1. God powerful, God holy, God immortal, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Amen.
2. Grace, mercy, my Jesus during the present dangers; cover us with thy Precious Blood. Amen.
3. Eternal Father, grant us mercy through the Blood of Jesus Christ, Your only Son; grant us mercy, we beseech thee. Amen.
For each decade, say:
On Large bead: Eternal Father, I offer You the Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to heal those of our souls.
On the 10 small beads: My Jesus, pardon and mercy, through the merits of thy Holy Wounds.

Conclude Chaplet with:
By all the wounds which You did bear with so much love and so much pain, let a sinner’s prayer obtain Your mercy, O Lord! (say 3 times)
I beseech the most blessed Virgin, through the anguish which your soul endured on account of these Wounds, to intercede for me, that my prayer may be heard.
