FULL-TIME CATHOLIC CHAPLAIN

Father Anthony (Tony) Appiah (2023-present)

In 2024, after spending eight years at the Fairfax Hospital, Fr. Stefan was re-assigned to Holy Trinity Church as a parochial vicar, and Father Anthony (Tony) Appiah became the current full-time Catholic Chaplain while residing at St. Ambrose. Prior to this assignment, Fr. Tony (who was born in Ghana and ordained in his native Diocese in 1992) was the pastor of the Ghanaian Catholic Community in the Arlington Diocese from 2012-2024, residing at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Falls Church.

While at St. Anthony’s, Fr. Tony also helped out at Inova Fairfax Hospital as the “backup” chaplain from 2020-24, filling in whenever Fr. Stefan and Fr. Sunny were not available, so his move to full-time Catholic Chaplain was uneventful. While working at the hospital, he is also trying to finish the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program, which focuses on pastoral formation, competence and reflection for those interested in deepening pastoral-spiritual care and chaplaincy skills. This CPE program is the first step for earning chaplain certification.

Currently, Fr. Appiah can be found at or on-call with the hospital Tuesday evening through Sunday evening.

PART-TIME ASSOCIATE CATHOLIC CHAPLAIN

Father Sunny Joseph (2019-present)

Born in India, Fr. Sunny Joseph was ordained a priest in 1998 in the Archdiocese of Changanacherry in Kerala, where he served as parochial vicar (1999-2003) and as pastor (2003-19) at various parishes there. Interspersed with his time in India, Father Sunny also served occasionally in the Arlington diocese at St. John the Apostle Church in Leesburg in 2011 and 2016, and at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Fredericksburg in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, he moved permanently to the Arlington diocese, and is currently a parochial vicar of St. Timothy Church in Chantilly and part-time chaplain at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

Currently, Fr. Joseph can be found at or on-call with the hospital Sunday evening through Tuesday evening. Occasionally, he will be there other days when Fr. Appiah is on vacation or retreat, and Fr. Owusu is unavailable.

FULL-TIME ASSISTANT CATHOLIC CHAPLAIN

Sister Leonida (Nida) Eguilos, SNDS (2015-present)

Originally from the Philippines, Sr. Nida Eguilos joined the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette, taking her first profession in 1986 and making her final vows in 1993.  She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Science, and then received a Master’s degree in Educational Management, with a specialization in Kindergarten Education.

On June 2, 2014, Sr. Nida moved to the USA and joined her fellow sisters in the Diocese of Arlington where she currently resides at her community’s convent at St. Michael’s parish.  As soon as she arrived, she began training to be a volunteer at the Inova Fairfax Hospital’s Pastoral Care Department, taking over for Sr. Marijo.  Since then, she has completed one unit of the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).  In addition to visiting patients and bringing them Holy Communion, she also coordinates the Catholic lay volunteers (Eucharistic Ministers) and assists the chaplain priests.

Sr. Nida can usually be found at the hospital during the day on Monday-Friday.

PART-TIME ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT/BOOKKEEPER

Clare (Haislmaier) Frasca (2019-present)

In 2019, Fr. Stefan hired Clare Haislmaier Frasca as the part-time Administrative Assistant/Bookkeeper for the Hospital Ministry, and she has been there ever since. In addition to taking care of budget-related items, Clare assists the Catholic Chaplains by making sure they have whatever they need to fulfill their duties. She also updated and maintains the Catholic Hospital Ministry Policies & Procedures Manual, and in 2020, she began working with offices in the Diocesan Chancery on creating a Palliative Care initiative at the Diocesan level, which is still being developed.

In order to help Fr. Stefan fulfill his mission of helping all the sick within the Diocese, Clare created and actively maintains several social media sites (YouTube, Facebook) and this website to help reach more people. She also created several versions of a booklet that consolidated the various pamphlets/brochures that was in the Prayer Folders. As of 2024, this Prayer Folder was condensed into one large booklet to make it easier for priests throughout the Diocese to hand out to patients that they visit within their parish. Everything in this booklet, as well as more prayers and information, are found here: https://padrepioministry.org/prayers-information/

Clare was hired as a part-time employee (less than 20 hours/week), and splits her time between working at the Hospital Ministry office and working remotely from home.
